The full moon smiled on the water
Pale and still
Till
A casually tossed pebble
Fractured her image
She vanished
And the watery surface silently said
o O O
An ever-widening mouth
Of concentric circles
Not a drop was left in its place
Everything moved
Rippled and swirled
From top to bottom
Of the pool
Nothing was as before
Then
In silence the surface re-formed
Smooth
Still
The moon smiled
The pebble lay still on the bottom
Unaltered.
I like this and the sense it reminds us of that change is impermanent on some levels. Very nice to see a poem from you
Haven’t written many lately – my muse has been waiting for spring! I’ve been struck by how easily some people can crash through the lives of others, impervious to the chaos they cause, and yet somehow lives usually rearrange themselves.
I like this one!
Pleased to hear that. You are my most respected literary critic 🙂
” . . . . somehow lives usually rearrange themselves.”
So it is with the water, so it is with everything. Usually!

I wonder why it takes a lifetime to understand that simple truth?
The surface reformed but – alas – the pebble was still at the bottom of the water!.
Great poem. Great meaning.
I’m not surprised this resonates with you 🙂
I have added this poem to my poetry book (my book of meaningful poems).
I’m flattered! I made a slight change – hope you agree.
What was the change?
After o O O – 2 new lines.
Reblogged this on fourth generation farmgirl and commented:
Thought I’d share this wonderful poem by the author of Catterel. It’s a great reminder about change.
I’m honoured 🙂
I really loved your poem. You are so talented! 🙂
