Pathetic Fallacy

Last night
Lost in the moonless dark
Weary of hanging heavily in the sky
A cloud sat down on us
As we slept
Wrapping us in its damp phantom fleece
While the thunder stamped and snarled
Sulking all around the horizon
Kicking up a fuss
And sparking lightning from its heels.

I wonder
Whether the cloud felt sorry
For us pitiful unprotected mortals
And hid us from the pyrotechnic anger
Flashing all around
Or if
Like a patient doting mother
With a recalcitrant child
Pausing till the tonitruing tantrum passed
She smothered us

Unawares?
