Words are like Stones

Words are like stones –
For your own purpose
You pick one up
And underneath is unsuspected teeming life
As panic-stricken insects lose their roof
And heads, and curse you.

 Hurl a stone aside
And where it falls it maims or kills
By chance or by design.
Some rocks or boulders lie
Overgrown with moss
Or weathered into insignificance.
So words  escape our mouths,
Full of meanings we did not intend
Or which miss their aim.

Out of the granite of your thoughts
You quarry, cut and carve,
Abut and join your words
Rough-hewn or chiselled into shape,
To sculpt a work of art
Erect a wall
Or build your world.
